Frequently Asked Questions

Since the recent revocation of compulsory quarantine for anyone returning from an Amber country if fully vaccinated, foreign governments have reported the presence of new COVID-19 variants in their countries. For this reason, the British government has added a new category to the Traffic Light System called "Amber Plus". The latter defies the new easing recently instated, meaning that regardless of your vaccination status, quarantine is compulsory on return from an Amber Plus destination.

There are a few different ways you could be affected if the status of the country you have travelled to changes.

  • I travelled to a Green list destination that turned Amber while I was away.
    • What should I do? You either need to book the next flight home before the update is official or you can remain at the destination.
    • What happens when I return? If you are fully vaccinated you will return to no change, however, if you are not fully vaccinated and choose to stay abroad, you will need to quarantine for 10.
  • I travelled to an Amber or Green list destination that turned Red while I was away.
    • What should I do? If the destination you travelled to changes to Red on the UK government traffic light system you should return to the UK on the next flight available before the update becomes official, you normally have 24 hours to act before the change is set in stone.
    • What happens when I return to the UK? If you return to the UK in time, you will be able to follow the existing rules of quarantine you were expected to follow based on the original status of the destination before you travel. If you choose to remain in a Red list country, you will be required to book a 10-day quarantine hotel package and 2 COVID-19 tests before returning to the UK. You can book your quarantine hotel by using the government website and going to quarantinehotelboookings.cmportal.co.uk.

Travelling during these unprecedented times can mean a lot of restrictions and surprises when arriving at your desired destination. However, most countries in the world have eased their restrictions for fully vaccinated travellers to include the removal of PCR testing before arrival and quarantine.

Here is the list of countries you cannot travel to and the reasons why:

  • Norway & Austria governments do not allow British guests regardless of their vaccination status.
  • Holland is only permitting travellers into their country for essential reasons.
  • Croatia is on the Green list, but even fully vaccinated guests need to present proof of a negative PCR or antigen test prior to arrival.
  • Malta requires vaccinated travellers to present proof of vaccination dated at least 2 weeks prior to arrival to avoid being required to undergo a PCR test.

Here is the list of countries accepting fully vaccinated guests without restrictions:

  • Mainland Portugal has waived the requirement of quarantine for all vaccinated guests!
  • Spain is open to, without any quarantine restrictions to both vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers provided a negative PCR test (within 72hrs), or proof of vaccine (min 14 days before travelling) are presented on arrival.
  • Malta is only accepting fully vaccinated travellers (children 5-11 accompanied by a vaccinated adult are allowed in provided they show proof of a negative test taken 72hrs before arrival).
  • Greece is accepting all fully vaccinated passengers without the need for PCR testing.
  • France and Germany, respectively Amber and Green destinations are freely accepting fully vaccinated passengers.

Normally, negative PCR test results do not need to be uploaded or submitted anywhere. Travellers simply need to bring the documentation provided from the clinic along with them to the airport/port.

You may book your test in any local test centre/clinic near you. Make sure to check what type of test the country you are travelling to is asking you to undertake (Antigen, PCR, Molecular). At Travel Megastore, we're offering 50% off your PCR test - when you book your holidays with us! The FCDO provides advice on whether or not travelling to a destination is recommended and safe. Some destinations have increased crime levels, certain laws as well as natural disasters, strikes, and terrorist attacks. The FDO follow these events and guide British travellers to avoid unpleasant surprises once in the destination. It is not illegal to travel to these destinations but your travel insurance will not cover you.

The English Traffic Light System restrictions are different from the travel advice provided by the FDO, however, dangerous increases in COVID-19 cases and the upspring of new variants in certain parts of the world could affect the decision of the FDO to advise not to travel to those destinations for reasons similar to the Traffic Light System.

Family emergencies, medical needs, business trips, or work commitments can be considered essential travel. Outside of travel that carries some sort of primary necessity, all other international travel, especially through these unprecedented and unpredictable times, can be considered non-essential.

The Government decides on the next Traffic Light system update every three weeks. These changes are not set in stone. Depending on certain factors, such as dramatic increases in cases, countries could move from Green to even Red without notice. Following worldwide news is good practice to stay up to date with what is happening around the world and for getting notifications of certain upcoming changes.

Watch out for Green or Amber destinations on the 'Green Watchlist'!

The title 'Green Watchlist' destination may allude to believing the status is green but, in reality, this destination is at a high risk of being downgraded to the 'Amber list' or even the 'Red list'.

The Traffic Light government announcement occurs every 3 weeks and dictates official changes in the green, amber or red status of countries around the world. If the country you are interested in travelling to is 'Amber' but on the 'Amber Watchlist', this indicates there is a high probability of the country moving from the 'Amber list' to the 'Red list' sooner than expected.

Likewise, as mentioned above, 'Green watchlist' countries have a likelihood of changing status and are being reviewed with scrutiny.

Travelling during these unprecedented times can mean a lot of restrictions and surprises when arriving at your desired destination. However, most countries in the world have eased their restrictions for fully vaccinated travellers to include the removal of PCR testing before arrival and quarantine.

Here is a high-level list of countries accepting fully vaccinated guests without restrictions:

  • Mainland Portugal has waived the requirement of quarantine for all vaccinated guests!
  • Spain is open to travel, without any quarantine restrictions to both vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers provided a negative PCR test (within 72hrs), or proof of vaccine (min 14 days before travelling) are presented on arrival.

  • Greece is accepting all fully vaccinated passengers without the need for PCR testing.
