Itinerary

Journey around Britain on some of the most scenic routes the country has to offer. Travel to Bristol via the Devon Coast and South Devon Hills before heading north to Leeds along the ‘Heart of Wales’ line. Continue on to Glasgow via the Settle and Carlisle Line, traversing the famous Ribblehead viaduct before ending your holiday in the gorgeous surroundings of Fort William, with a day trip on the world famous Jacobite Steam Train.

UK Rail

Trains in the United Kingdom are run by a number of operators under franchise agreements with the Government. The types of train and facilities therefore vary, even within a brand.

Amenities

Luggage Guidelines : There are no luggage restrictions on the trains. However, please be aware some of these may be used for commuting so space may be tight, as well as getting access to your luggage on crowded trains. Trains connecting to major airports sometimes have extra space for luggage.

Check-in Time : There is no check in time. However, most operators close the train doors 30 seconds before departure.

Dining : There are no dining facilities on most trains. A lot of commuter trains have also stopped trolley services. However, the long distance trains usually have a bar buffet where you can get sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. Some operators offer complimentary tea or coffee for First Class ticketholders.

Accommodations : On most commuter trains, both First Class and Standard Class carriages have seats four across, whereas, on a lot of intercity trains, seats are three across for First Class. A lot of operators also have lounges for First Class ticket holders at the stations. Most people who upgrade to first class, do it to have more space and fewer people in the carriage. A lot of trains also have quiet carriages and mobile carriages in First Class. There are more than 20 train operators in the UK, and they all offer different First Class services and benefits at different fares.

Caledonian Sleeper

The Caledonian Sleeper provides overnight travel between London and Scotland. It is actually two separate trains; the Highland sleeper, which serves Inverness, Fort William, and Aberdeen, and the Lowland sleeper for Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Luggage Guidelines

Each cabin has room for luggage under the bottom bunk. The dimensions are 31 cm high by 122cm wide by 54cm deep.

Oversize luggage can be stored in the Seated Coach, however, this cannot be guaranteed.

Dining

All sleeping car passengers have access to the lounge car, which has an extensive menu featuring many Scottish specialties.

Breakfast is complimentary for sleeping car passengers mentioned above.

Accommodations

Classic Room - cabin for one or two people.

Club Room. Includes ensuite bathroom and complimentary breakfast.

Caledonian Double. All the facilities of the Club Room as well as a double bed.

Notable Scenery

The highlight is the Scottish section of the London-Fort William journey. Known as the Deerstalker, this train travels along the scenic West Highland Line. Watch out for deer alongside the train!

DAY 1

London to Bristol via Totnes

Your holiday begins with a scenic journey from London to Bristol via Totnes. Highlights of the journey include traveling alongside the Kennet and Avon canal before heading through the Wiltshire countryside to give glimpses of the famous Wiltshire white horses. As the train heads into Devon, it hugs the coast giving gorgeous views of the sea before climbing through the South Devon Hills. After a quick change in Totnes, it’s off to Bristol in time for dinner. (Overnight Bristol)

DAY 2

Bristol

Enjoy a full day in Bristol at your leisure. Why not spend the morning sampling the culture by visiting the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery or climb to the top of Cabot Tower for some great views of the city and surrounding area. Spend the afternoon in Bristol’s old city and have some lunch at St Nicholas’ market before ending the day by watching the sunset from the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the symbol of Bristol. DAY 3

Bristol to Leeds via the Heart of Wales Line

Today you will travel from Bristol to Leeds along the beautiful ‘Heart of Wales’ line. This spectacular rural railway line will traverse some of the country’s finest landscapes including Gwent Levels, as well as pass-through numerous spa towns and past historic castles. The Shropshire Hills can also be seen in all their glory, one of the UK’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. (Overnight in Leeds)

DAY 4

Leeds

Enjoy a full day in the UK’s third-largest city. Some of the city’s main attractions include Kirkstall Abbey, where you’ll find the impressive ruins of an 800-year-old monastery, Leeds Cathedral, and Leeds Art Gallery and City Museum. There is also the wonderful Roundhay Park to enjoy, described as one of the most charming city parks in Europe. (Overnight in Leeds)

DAY 5

Leeds to Glasgow via the Carlisle and Settle Line

Your journey today takes you from Leeds to the city of Glasgow. On this journey, your train will pass through the Yorkshire Dales National Park as well as over the famous Ribblehead Viaduct and through the Eden Valley. Arrive into Glasgow for the afternoon in time to visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery for amazing masterpieces, wander Glasgow’s magnificent botanical gardens, or stop by the Riverside Museum and learn about Glasgow’s history as a great port city. DAY 6

Glasgow to Fort William

Today, you board the train and travel across the heart of Scotland to its picturesque West. The Highlands and Scottish countryside are a magnificent array of shady glens, rugged mountain peaks, and a coastline strewn with quaint fishing villages. Jacobite Steam Train/West Highland Line to Mallaig

Embark on a scenic train journey described by some as the world's most beautiful. The Jacobite winds its way through breath-taking Scottish scenery. You'll pass lochs and mountains, across the impressive Glenfinnan Viaduct, and on until reaching Mallaig. Explore this charming coastal community before returning to Fort William. When the Jacobite is not running enjoy this beautiful journey on the local Scot Rail service. (Overnight in Glencoe)
