Buckfast Abbey, Dartmoor National Park, Princetown & Tavistock (full day) -

Home to a community of Benedictine monks, Buckfast Abbey lies on the banks of the River Dart. Here, we soak up the peaceful atmosphere and explore the beautiful Abbey church with its art treasures. Wander the tranquil gardens and browse the gift and produce shops. 

We then continue on a scenic drive through Dartmoor National Park; this wild heart of Devon is peppered with moss-blanketed boulders, honey-coloured heaths, tinkling streams and cinematic granite tors. Look out for rare wildlife before we reach our next stop; Princetown. This tiny moorland outpost is home to the foreboding Dartmoor prison and the Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre, which was once the Old Duchy Hotel where Arthur Conan Doyle penned the eerie The Hound of the Baskervilles. 

Our next stop is Tavistock. This classic West Country market town is the gateway to the Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage Site. Explore the old streets, which throng with an eclectic mix of small independent shops and delicatessens, and take a peek behind the Town Hall to discover the award-winning and historic Pannier Market. 

Dartmouth, River Dart Cruise & Totnes (full day) - 

We start the day with some time at leisure in the riverside town of Dartmouth. Former home of Agatha Christie, it is easily one of Devon's prettiest destinations. Explore the pastel-coloured buildings leaning at angles and the picturesque harbour laden with yachts and pleasure boats. 

We then enjoy a relaxing cruise along the calm waters of the River Dart, where we admire the magnificent buildings including the Britannia Royal Naval College and Agatha Christie’s Greenway Estate. Cameras at the ready for the Sharpham Estate with its vineyards, and steep, toppling wooded hillsides plunging down to the water’s edge. 

We disembark in the historic market town of Totnes, a helter-skelter of charming streets and fine Tudor buildings nestled beneath the silhouette of the sturdy Norman castle. We have time to explore the boutique shops famed for their range of ethical products, wholefoods and fair trade goods.

Optional Excursion: 

Brixham & Teignmouth – £12pp (full day) 

Join our optional excursion where we first visit Brixham, an attractive port fringed with colourful fisher cottages on the surrounding hillsides. Explore the winding streets, snug with bustling arcades and gift shops. The horseshoe harbour is well worth a look, being home to a replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, the Golden Hind. 

Afterwards, we head to Teignmouth, a handsome estuary town which has the benefits of a bustling harbour as well as the classic attractions of a seaside resort. It boasts an elegant Georgian crescent, promenade and Victorian pier with fine views across the bay.

Located in Erskine on the banks of the River Clyde, the 3-star Muthu Glasgow River Hotel is a lovely base for our break. After breakfast, we have time to spend at leisure. Then after lunch at the hotel, we depart for central Edinburgh where there’s free time before making your way to the castle to take your seat for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The show brings together musicians and performers from every part of the world for a fabulous display of international culture. After the performance we travel back to our hotel. 

Loch Lomond -  

We have a full day to experience Loch Lomond’s stunning scenery, along with visits to the wee coastal town of Inveraray with its show-stopping castle, picturesque walking trails and quaint cafés, plus the pretty village of Luss boasting prim rows of chocolate-box cottages and one of Loch Lomond’s lovely

North Devon is known for its stunning coastline and golden, sandy beaches. On this short break, we explore this lovely region and its striking scenery by land and by sea, enjoying a fun cruise along the Exmoor Cliffs, a trip across the border to the Cornish seaside town of Bude and a wonderful visit to the beautiful Hartland Abbey and Gardens, to create a memorable few days away.

Ilfracombe & Exmoor Cliffs and Waterfalls Cruise (full day) -  

We head for Ilfracombe, a popular holiday town during the Victorian era and home to stunning beaches and the largest harbour on the north Devon coast. We embark on the Ilfracombe Princess to explore some of the most dramatic coastlines and highest cliffs in England. On our cruise, we take in the impressive headlands of the Exmoor National Park, Great Hangman cliffs just outside Combe Martin which stand at a huge 1043ft, plus the famous Silver mines and Watermouth Castle. We may even be lucky enough to see harbour porpoises and grey seals before we head back to Ilfracombe for some time at leisure. 

Bude & Hartland Abbey and Gardens (full day) -  

We start our day on the north Cornwall coast in the delightful seaside town of Bude. This town has a laid-back charm and atmosphere with pristine sandy beaches, spectacular views and independently-owned shops and restaurants. 

We then make our way to Hartland Abbey, a stately home in a stunning setting on the north-west Devon coast. Built in the 12th century, the abbey survived as a monastery longer than any other in the country. In 1530, Henry VIII gifted the abbey to the Keeper of his Wine Cellar and the house still remains in the family – what a gift! We explore the fascinating interiors of the house, which span Medieval, Queen Anne, Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods, before a wander around the beautiful woodland, walled gardens and parkland, complete with wild flowers, peacocks and donkeys.

Barnstable Market – £10pp (half day) 

On our optional excursion we head to Barnstaple, the capital of north Devon. The town features many fine buildings and attractive streets and is also home to the historic Barnstaple Pannier Market which offers a range of produce, arts and crafts, antiques and collectables.

Itinerary 5: Bournemouth & the Isle of Wight by Hovercraft - Coach Tour 

The bustling resort of Bournemouth is home to seven miles of golden sands and a historic pier, offering a traditional and friendly seaside ambience. From our base here, we explore the charming Dorchester Market and the bustling harbourside town of Weymouth. We also discover golden-sanded Ryde after taking a fabulous journey to the Isle of Wight by hovercraft, and have the chance to visit historic Salisbury to complete a lovely few days away.

Our first excursion takes us to the charming county town of Dorchester, where we have time to browse the stalls of its traditional and charming market. There is a range of products on offer from 200 traders. 

We continue to wander down the memory lane of seaside resorts with a visit to Weymouth, crowned with a bustling harbour and fine Georgian seafront. The resort boasts a long sandy beach peppered with candy-stripe kiosks, plus fantastic views across the bay taking in the World Heritage Jurassic coastline. 

Hovercraft to Ryde, Isle of Wight (full day) -

We travel by coach to the popular resort of Southsea, where we then take a memorable journey as foot passengers by hovercraft to the Isle of Wight. Easily the fastest Isle of Wight ferry service across the Solent, it takes just ten minutes as we ‘fly’ on a cushion of air! 

We disembark in the seaside town of Ryde with its long stretch of golden sand and pretty esplanade. There is plenty of time to take a relaxing stroll along the famous pier (the oldest in England), admire the boats moored in the town’s harbour or explore the boutique shops, bars and restaurants before we head back, via hovercraft then coach, to the hotel. 

Optional Excursion - 

Salisbury – £12pp (full day)

Join us on an optional excursion which takes us to Salisbury. Set in a quintessentially English landscape, this stunning city has a rich heritage with hundreds of buildings listed for their historical merit including the medieval cathedral which boasts the tallest spire in Britain. Explore the patchwork of streets which boast a picturesque jumble of architectural styles, ranging from medieval walls and half-timbered Tudor town houses to Georgian mansions and Victorian villas. There’s still time for a well-deserved rest at one of the many cosy tea rooms dotted along the side streets.
